At the pinnacle of Schubert's lieder output, Winterreise is a masterpiece of despair and one of the most powerful portrayals of the human heart in music. Setting 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller, it follows a rejected lover on a painful journey through a frozen landscape, both real and symbolic, culminating in a gradual descent into madness depicted through some of Schubert's most devastatingly beautiful music.
Matthew Brook is an internationally acclaimed bass-baritone, renowned for his performances of Bach and Handel. He has appeared as a soloist throughout Europe, the Americas, Australia and Asia, earning numerous awards and a Grammy nomination.
Anna Markland is an award-winning pianist and singer with a distinguished career spanning more than four decades. A former BBC Young Musician of the Year winner, she performs regularly with leading vocal ensembles including Tenebrae and Britten Sinfonia Voices.
Presented in a candlelit setting, this moving performance offers an intimate experience at the beautiful Stapleford Granary.
