St Mary Magdalene Ickleton is a Grade 1 listed church situated on the Icknield Way, at the junction of three counties. It has been the focus  of village life for over 1000 years. The building dates from the 11thcentury and comprises architectural features ranging from Saxo-Norman to Victorian. The Norman interior was recognised by Pevsner as having “ few equals in the country.”

But its most amazing inheritance was hidden away for 400 years, and only came to light by accident. In 1979, restoration work following an arson attack on the church unexpectedly revealed rare and beautiful wall paintings beneath the whitewash of the nave.
