St Mary Magdalene Church, Ickleton

St Mary Magdalene, Ickleton is a Grade I listed church situated on the ancient Icknield Way, at the junction of three counties. It is one of the Hinkledux Churches, serving the South Cambridgeshire villages of Hinxton, Ickleton and Duxford.

The church has been at the heart of village life for over 1,000 years. The building dates from the 11th century and features architectural styles ranging from Saxo-Norman to Victorian. The Norman interior was recognised by Pevsner as having "few equals in the country".

Perhaps its most remarkable inheritance lay hidden for over 400 years and was only rediscovered by chance. In 1979, restoration work following an arson attack unexpectedly revealed rare and beautiful medieval wall paintings beneath the whitewashed walls of the nave.
