Described by BBC Music Magazine as “a tour de force, rightly acclaimed by the audience”, the Elias String Quartet have established themselves as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of their generation. Formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music, they are now the ensemble in residence. Their recording catalogue has been met with widespread critical acclaim.
This season they present their three-concert Schumann series at Wigmore Hall and elsewhere, which includes a newly commissioned work by Sally Beamish.
Schumann’s first quartet has long been a personal favourite of the Elias Quartet. Highly charged, joyful and poignant, it is rewarding for both performers and listeners alike. Sally Beamish’s ‘Nine Fragments’ was written for the Elias Quartet as a companion piece to Schumann’s first quartet. Their programme ends with Mendelssohn’s String Quartet no 2, characterised by soaring melodies, stormy power and shimmering flurries.
Pre-concert food will be available to purchase. Ticket holders will be sent an email a week before the date of the concert with details of the menu and information on ordering.
