Join volunteers from Sustainable Cottenham’s Nature Recovery Group to explore the rich variety of wildlife at the Old Rec. Experts will be on hand to share insights into the small mammals living in the area, the moths that emerge after dark, and the diverse plants and trees found on site.
The event begins bright and early at 8am prompt, when volunteers will check the small mammal traps to see what has been caught*. All animals will be carefully released by 10am to minimise stress.
*Those interested in seeing the traps being set can visit the Old Rec at 6pm on Friday 29 May, when volunteers will be preparing them for the following morning.
Throughout the morning, short guided talks and tours will take place at 9am, 10am and 11am, offering further opportunities to learn about the site’s fascinating flora and fauna.
This event is part of Cambridge Nature Festival a celebration of nature on your doorstep.
The ‘Old Rec’ is a meadow at the bottom of Broad Lane, Cottenham, just before the bridge over the Lode. It is so-called because it was created as the parish recreation ground in the 19th century during the Enclosures. In recent years the field has been actively managed to encourage biodiversity.
