Life Model Figure Painting Course

Join Sebastian Aplin at his Sawston studio for a five‑week painting workshop exploring the fundamentals of painting the human form from life.

In this course, you’ll progress from creating accurate monochrome silhouettes to modelling the figure using colour. Sebastian will demonstrate how to use oil paints to “sculpt” shapes out of the background, placing the model convincingly within a realistic space. You’ll learn to focus on the contrasts between areas of light and shadow to build depth and form.

This course is not suitable for novice painters; some painting experience is required. However, the most important prerequisite is a willingness to look beyond detail and understand the “big picture,” even when the methods feel unconventional. While demonstrations are in oil, you are welcome to paint in acrylics if that is your preferred medium.
