There will not be an interval during the performance
Laureates of the 2015 Wigmore Hall International Quartet Competition, the Piatti Quartet has produced a string of critically-acclaimed recordings and collaborated with many recognisable names in classical music including Nicky Spence, Barry Douglas, Janina Fialkowska, Melvyn Tan, and the Belcea Quartet. They were Kings Place’s Resident Quartet for the 2023/24 season. Renowned for their ‘profound music making’ (The Strad) and ‘lyrical warmth’ (BBC Music Magazine), the quartet is known for its diverse programming and creative relationships with contemporary composers, including Mark-Anthony Turnage, Emily Howard, Joseph Phibbs, Anna Meredith, Charlotte Harding and Gavin Higgins.
The group will perform two Russian quartets, written 10 years apart. Tchaikovsky’s first quartet (1871) is classical string quartet writing at its finest, epitomising the composer’s remarkable gift for melody, not least in the famous slow movement. Borodin’s much-loved second quartet (1881) exudes warmth and a freedom of invention, with glorious melodies. Puccini’s perfectly formed Chrysanthemums provides a miniature centrepiece in the form of a heartfelt elegy.
Pre-concert food will be available to purchase. Ticket holders will be sent an email a week before the date of the concert with details of the menu and information on ordering.
